Caffè Borbone: a guide to the Rossa, Nera, Blu, Oro and Dek blends

Caffè Borbone: a guide to the Rossa, Nera, Blu, Oro and Dek blends

Why Borbone is one of the brands our customers ask for most

For more than fifteen years we have been helping customers choose the right coffee, and one name comes up again and again: Caffè Borbone. It is a Campanian roaster that built its reputation on a simple idea — bringing the taste of Neapolitan espresso home, with full body and dense crema.

When someone asks us for “a blend that tastes like the bar”, this is almost always where they end up. Borbone works with a very recognisable range of blends — Nera, Rossa, Blu, Oro and the decaffeinated Dek — available in nearly every format there is: Nespresso® compatible capsules, A Modo Mio®, Dolce Gusto®, Caffitaly®, Espresso Point, 44 mm ESE pods, plus ground coffee for the moka and whole beans.

The upshot is that the same blend can follow you even when you change machine. In practice that freedom matters more than it sounds. In this guide we explain how the blends differ and how to find your way around the colours and formats.

The blends explained: Nera, Rossa, Blu, Oro and Dek

The Borbone colours are not a graphic flourish: they signal the character of the blend. This is how we describe them to customers every day.

Nera (Black Blend) is the boldest of the family. Dark roast, full body, clear toasted and bitter notes: the choice for anyone who wants a short espresso that makes itself heard. You will find it in Respresso capsules, in Don Carlo and in compostable pods.

Rossa (Red Blend) is the best known and, in our experience, the one that pleases the most people. It stays intense and creamy but with a rounder profile than the Nera: chocolate, nuts, a long finish. If you have no idea where to start, this is usually where we start.

Blu (Blue Blend) is the balanced blend par excellence: less bitter, softer, well suited to people who drink several coffees a day and to anyone who adds milk. It is also the blend we see most often in offices, because it suits a range of tastes.

Oro (Gold Blend) is the most delicate and aromatic: a higher share of arabica, gentle acidity, natural sweetness. We recommend it to anyone who finds the classic Neapolitan blends too strong, and to those who want aroma more than structure.

Dek (Green Blend) is the decaffeinated version: made for the evening, or for anyone limiting caffeine, and it keeps a full profile rather than tasting watered down. It is available across several systems, from capsules to pods.

The same coffee, in the format you need

This is the part that clears up almost every doubt in the shop. The blends stay the same; what changes is the container — and the commercial name of the line.

Respresso is the Nespresso® Original compatible capsule line: available in Rossa, Blu, Nera, Oro and Dek. Don Carlo is the line for Lavazza A Modo Mio® machines, with the same main variants. For Nescafé Dolce Gusto® machines the line is called Dolce Re.

Then there are capsules for Caffitaly®, for Espresso Point and for Bialetti machines: different systems, same blend philosophy.

Anyone who prefers a more traditional espresso will find 44 mm ESE pods, also available in a compostable version. And for the moka pot or a machine with a grinder there is ground coffee and whole beans — still the favourite formats of anyone who likes to take their time in the morning.

One practical tip we always give: check your machine's system before ordering a supply. Capsules that look alike can belong to different systems, and compatibility is the one thing you cannot fix afterwards.

How to choose the right blend for your habits

The method we use with customers does not start from the coffee but from how you drink it. Three questions are almost always enough.

How short do you want it? If you love a ristretto with thick crema, Nera or Rossa is the right direction. If you lengthen the cup or add milk, Blu handles dilution better without turning bitter.

How many do you drink a day? With several coffees a day a balanced blend works better: Blu or Oro tire the palate less. People who have just one usually want it intense — and that is where Nera delivers.

Who else drinks it at home? When tastes differ in a household, the practical answer is not to hunt for the perfect compromise but to keep two blends: one intense, one delicate. That is exactly what we do ourselves.

If you have never tried Borbone, we suggest a simple path: start with Rossa, then move up towards Nera or down towards Oro. Within two packs you will know exactly where you belong. And if your machine takes more than one format, compare the same blend as a pod and as a capsule: the difference in the cup is more noticeable than you would expect.

Not just espresso: ginseng, barley and the indulgent drinks

There is a part of the Borbone range that customers discover almost by accident and then keep coming back to. Alongside the classic blends there are the other drinks: ginseng in classic and zero versions, barley, nocciolino, cortado, cappuccino and a few more indulgent options based on chocolate or pistachio.

They are not a side note. In households where somebody does not drink coffee — or does not drink it in the evening — this is what lets everyone use the same machine. They are available for several systems, in particular Nespresso®, A Modo Mio® and Dolce Gusto®.

If the idea of a different kind of break appeals to you, take a look at the treats and sugar and at the cups as well: a good thick, pre-warmed cup holds the temperature and protects the crema far better than most people expect.

Our closing advice

Three things we have learned in more than fifteen years behind the counter and on the phone with customers.

Buy the amount you actually drink. Coffee does not improve with age: capsules and pods have a protective barrier, but once ground coffee is open it loses aroma within a few weeks. Keep it sealed, away from light, heat and humidity — never in the fridge.

Look after the machine. An excellent blend in a scaled-up machine gives a mediocre cup. A dedicated descaler used regularly is the cheapest way to protect both the coffee and the appliance.

Taste before you stock up. The Borbone blends have distinct personalities: the one your colleague loves may not be yours. Better one trial pack, then a supply of the right blend.

If you would like advice on which blend or which format suits your machine, get in touch: our team is always happy to help you find the solution that fits your habits.
